Trans-Identified Male Who Stabbed His Mother to Death Sentenced to Prison, Classified As A “Female” Inmate

A trans-identified male who brutally murdered his mother has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison, according to a press release from the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office. In the statement, DA Eric Gonzalez referred to Andre “Drea” Eugene as a “woman.”

Eugene was first arrested in January of 2024 after his mother, Donna Marie Hyman, was found dead in her Brooklyn apartment. Hyman’s body was first found by her daughter, who had rushed to the apartment after she had received a call from Hyman, but when she answered could only hear blood-curdling screams.

Hyman was found “lying lifeless on the floor” and had been stabbed over 50 times in the head and chest. The corpse of Hyman’s beloved mini poodle, Gigi, was found outside of the building, having apparently been stabbed approximately 32 times and thrown from an 11th floor balcony.

According to court records, police officers found Eugene “naked and covered in blood” in the building’s lobby. Despite the obvious indications of foul play, Eugene reportedly attempted to claim that Hyman had died by suicide and that Gigi had fallen from the balcony by accident.

Eugene was later treated for stab wounds that were suspected to be self-inflicted, as well as a dog bite.

Prior to the killing, Eugene worked as a paraprofessional with kindergarten-aged students at the Henry D. Woodworth School in Brooklyn.

Following Eugene’s arrest, there were some discrepancies in the way in which the crime was reported. While most media outlets correctly referred to Eugene as Hyman’s son, information was later released by police which indicated that Eugene identified as a transgender “woman.”

While it is unclear when Eugene began to transition, multiple early photos of him and his mother posted to her Facebook show him with a masculine appearance. Comments under photos featuring Eugene all suggest he was well-liked by friends and family.

Though Eugene’s gender identity is not mentioned anywhere on Hyman’s Facebook where she often shared photos of her family and friends, two photos of Gigi, her poodle, were posted that suggest Hyman was in favor of LGBT causes. In one, Gigi is seen with a Gay Pride Month banner. In another, the dog is centered in a Human Rights Campaign photo frame that says “Fighting For Transgender Justice.”

On October 9, 2025, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office announced that Eugene had been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in September. In the press release, the office failed to mention that Eugene was male, and referred to him as a “woman.” Throughout the release, the office used Eugene’s “feminine” preferred name and “she/her” pronouns.

Following his arrest last year, Eugene was placed in detention at the Eric M. Tyler Center on Rikers Island, a facility that houses male adults and adolescents. His intake information listed his sex as “male.” However, Reduxx has now learned that Eugene has since been moved to the Rose M. Singer Center – a women’s facility on Rikers Island. His inmate classification has also been updated from “male” to “female.”

Eugene’s move to the women’s section is unsurprising, as the New York City Department of Corrections (NYCDOC) has an explicit policy favoring the “identity” of inmates in issues of housing.

In 2016, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed an order directing all public schools, recreation centers and other city buildings that have single-sex bathrooms and locker rooms to let people use the bathrooms of the gender with which they identify. The NYCDOC initially was granted an exemption due to safety concerns, but was soon after ordered to implement similar policies, allowing inmates to choose to be housed in a male or a female correctional center.

As a result of the gender identity policies embraced by New York City’s politicians, multiple violent male criminals are currently being housed at the Rose M. Singer Center.

One such criminal is a sadistic serial killer who murdered and dismembered at least three women. Harvey Marcelin, who identifies as a “transgender lesbian” and uses the name Marceline Harvey, was arrested in 2022 for the murder of Susan Leyden after parts of her body were found scattered near Marcelin’s apartment.

Marcelin is described as “female” by the NYCDOC and was placed in the women’s prison for a time, before unspecified conditions presumably linked to his advanced age saw him transferred to an infirmary center.

Another inmate, Nicolas Rivera Suarez, is currently being held at the Rose M. Singer center awaiting trial for the rape of a young boy.

In November 2023, a former female inmate launched a lawsuit against the City of New York after being “repeatedly sexually assaulted” by a male inmate who had been housed in the women’s section of Rikers Island. Known only as Rose Doe, the inmate says she was subjected to repeat abuse by a male who was permitted to stay in women’s protective custody after claiming to be “transgender.”

Rose Doe was first housed at the Rose M. Singer Center, the only women’s facility on Rikers Island, in December of 2021. Shortly after, a male inmate was transferred into Doe’s unit on the basis of his self-declared “gender identity.”

According to court records, at the time the male entered the women’s housing unit, he was being investigated for his potential involvement in a prostitution ring operating within Rikers Island. The ring involved staff and inmates, and the NYCDOC was reportedly aware that he was likely moved to the female unit to facilitate his procurement of female inmates to pimp out to male inmates and staff.

Disturbingly, the lawsuit alleges multiple officials within the DOC leveraged the City’s liberal transgender inmate guidance to ensure the male inmate could remain in the female unit.
