A male who claimed to identify as a “female” after sexually assaulting a woman in a female lavatory has been jailed for 16 months and made to sign the sex offenders register.
On the morning of March 21, 2022, Ian Bullock attacked a woman in the toilets of Birmingham New Street railway station.
The victim had entered the washroom and seen Bullock, and while she had thought it was odd that a man was in the female restrooms, she had assumed he worked for the station due to his attire. As she finished using the stall and made towards the sinks, Bullock moved to bend down next to her as if he were going to pick something up, and then sexually assaulted her.
Facing resistance from the victim following the assault, Bullock, 39, left the bathroom and entered the station. But the victim kept an eye on him, watching as Bullock quickly changed his attire in an apparent effort to disguise himself — discarding his high-visibility vest and putting on a beanie hat.
The victim immediately went to station staff and pointed her assailant out. British Transport Police were called, and Bullock was quickly arrested at the scene.
According to a press release issued by the British Transport Police (BTP) today, Bullock had claimed that the reason he was in the women’s facilities was that he “now identified as female.”
Bullock was convicted of sexual assault at Birmingham and Solihull Magistrates’ Court on December 12, but would be sentenced on February 7.
According to the BTP, Bullock has been sentenced to 16 months in prison, and was ordered to the sex offender’s register for a term of 10 years.
He has also been handed a ten year Sexual Harm Prevention Order which prohibits him from entering or loitering outside female bathrooms, and wearing any type of high-visibility jacket other than for a lawful employment purpose.
Despite the fact that Bullock did identify himself as “female,” both BTP and the courts addressed Bullock as a male and used masculine pronouns when referring to him.
In the statement issued by British Transport Police today, Detective Inspector Ian Wright commended the victim for her bravery in coming forward following her ordeal.
“Bullock is a dangerous individual who deliberately changed his clothing that morning in order to loiter in the female toilets undetected and launch this vile, pre-meditated assault on the victim in a space she had every right to feel safe in.”
