A trans-identified pedophile has complained in court about the “distress” he has experienced by being held in a male prison after previously being turned loose following a child pornography conviction.
Reduxx reported in August 2023 how Dominic Carter, now going by “Sophie,” was convicted on three counts of making indecent images of children after being arrested in April of 2021. Despite two images on his phone coming under the classification of Category A, reserved for the most serious type of child sexual abuse content, Carter was spared an immediate prison sentence. He was instead handed 18 months, suspended on the condition of good behavior and compliance with release conditions.
During the trial, his attorney attempted to argue that he had a history of child abuse and alcoholism, in order to mitigate. It was only at the sentencing hearing when Carter revealed he identified as transgender, with the court immediately swapping to referring to him as “she/her” and “Miss.”
In serving his suspended sentence in the community, Carter had to adhere to various restrictions and conditions, including completing 60 hours of rehabilitation sessions, 120 hours of unpaid work, and registering as a sex offender. He is also subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years.
However, after conviction, Carter allegedly ended up living a “chaotic” lifestyle, including being made homeless. He was no longer staying at his registered address, and according to prosecutors, even faked being kidnapped to the police. He told police that he was being held hostage for £140, with police speaking to him throughout the day until they arrested him.
Since his conviction, he has appeared in court four times total, with prosecutor Hannah Douglas telling Southampton Crown Court that his breaches, including failing to comply with notification requirements, were “deliberate.” He pled guilty to three offenses in total, which also included failure to attend probation appointments.
Carter has been held in remand at HMP Winchester, a Category B male prison, which the defense told the court created “additional difficulties” for him. The “male environment” of the prison was creating “some distress and concern.” He couldn’t turn up to his probation appointments, the defense argued, because he had been kicked out of his parent’s house, and was “assaulted” while living on the streets.
“That particular chaotic lifestyle made them disengage with probation,” said defense lead Eve Shelley. “This defendant has been remanded in custody since the first of April this year and has used the time in custody in a positive way. They are now no longer using illicit drugs. This defendant has expressed to me an understating that upon receiving a sentence of immediate custody… that it is an opportunity to use that time positively,” she added.
As a result, Judge Nicholas Rownland gave Carter six months in prison, saying he had “no choice” but to finally remand him to custody.
“I appreciate that your lifestyle is chaotic. That last thing I want to do is to have to send you to prison for these offences,” Judge Rowland concluded. “I have given full credit for your plea. I have much hope that now this slate is wiped clean that there won’t be another one in the future. You need to sort this out otherwise you will go to prison for longer and longer periods.”
After the initial 2023 prosecution, Standing for Women Hampshire told Reduxx they were concerned about the fact the court referred to him with female pronouns, something that also occurred in the most recent prosecution, leading to him likely being recorded on the crime statistics as a woman.
“Once again we see the thing that never happens, a male sex offender claiming a female identity to mitigate his punishment. It’s beyond comprehension that the courts are falling for this nonsense,” the representative told Reduxx.
“We have serious concerns about how this man will be recorded, both in crime statistics and especially on the sex offender register. For the media to show such deference to the desires of a pedophile that they use his adopted name and she/her pronouns throughout their report is insulting and hugely disrespectful towards women and his very real victims,” she added.
